Work for a Jerk and Succeed Anyway: How to Navigate Bosses Behaving Badly
Every job seems to have those self-absorbed, arrogant, stupid, and sarcastic bosses. A little bit of diplomacy goes a long way, and here are some tips on how to get along with a jerk:
First, be tactful and discreet about your anger. Working with a jerk requires you to manage your emotions. Discussing your anger with somebody might be dangerous for several reasons. There’s always a chance that your boss could overhear it if you talk to someone in the office. And in some instances, your officemate may not be trustworthy to share sentiments, there are some office politics that you must avoid.
Try to look to the other side of his character, after all, your boss might not be that jerk at all. Consider humanizing the interaction. Find the common ground if possible. You can have coffee or snacks together, go out for lunch, meet him at happy and talk a little bit, get along with him in some company events. It may require a lot of hard work and confidence that you can do it.
Pace your boss. Let your boss see that you are working on the same work ethic, you might try to end up on his/her good side. Convince him that you are good employee to work with. Follow instructions carefully and obey rules.
Have constructive comments during company’s review time. To improve work relationships, companies often establish ways to deal with it. And not because your boss is a jerk, you have to be completely passive. During the review time, make a constructive comment that boss’ superiors may want to hear. Instead of giving complaints, give some suggestions that might help to improve your team’s performance. Think of the deeper source of the problem.
And lastly, bear in mind that it is better to work for a jerk than being unemployed.
